The Difference was founded in 1995 with the former members of Nasty Society and Blackmail. The first line-up was: Dirk De Kesel-bassguitar, Kristof Ingels-drums, Christophe De Bock-rhythm guitar, Steven Van Hyfte-lead guitar and Gerd Hanssens-vocals. At that time the band mostly played doomy songs with progressive influences. A first demo with the songs Different world, Hungry for passion and Broken dreams was recorded very low budget on tape in their rehearsal room. In 1999 a second demo was recorded on cd witch included 5 songs: Running out of time, Heading for the unknown, Lost in oblivion, Make your choise and Sence of dignity. Again with several gigs as a result. Around this period they competed in several rock-concours almost always reaching the finals. During that period they also supported Lacuna Coil from Italy at the Biebob in Vosselaar.

In 2001 their third demo “Autumn tale” was recorded. For a part of the recording they went to Midas studios. This resulted in a better quality opposed to the former cd. Shortly after the recording of this cd Dirk de Kesel and Kristof Ingels left the band. They were replaced by Steven Mervielde on bass guitar and Edward Timmerman on drums. This switch influenced the style of the band. Their songs became heavier and faster. The fourth demo “Into a distant past” was released in 2002 and included the songs Time, Book of seasons, Reflections, Blood is the life and Intoxicated.

After a period of hard work a first full-cd “Lost in mass confusion” was recorded in autumn 2004 at the Midas-studio. The album got very good reviews (80/100 in Aardschok). This resulted in more acknowledgement and great gigs. In 2006 The Difference entered the “Metalbash” competition where they played in the finals as the only Belgian band. They became third. Aardschok wrote: “The Belgians were musically seen the best band of the day”. In spring 2007 rhythm guitarist Christophe De Bock unexpectedly left the band. It took almost a year before he was replaced by the young but talented Bram Van de Moortel. Six months of playing many gigs followed and they soon started thinking about the next cd.

The machine started to roll again and during the two following years new songs were composed. The Difference signed a contract with the ambitious label “Battle Cat Productions.” This and the hard work of Steven Mervielde behind the scene resulted in several big gigs. The band was able to play on for instance the Alcatraz Metalfest with Saxon, Testament and Agent Steel. In the summer of 2009 the second full album was recorded and baptized “When light uncovers grey.” This time recordings took place at the CCR-studios in Zulte and resulted in a very professional sound. The artwork for the cd was made in Brazil by Gustavo Sazes. The new songs evolved to solid progressive and melodic metal in which there had been a lot of experimenting involved. Even a violist played a part in one song. “Time”, a song from the fourth demo, which is frequently played on shows has been re-recorded and can be downloaded for free on this website. This new version of “Time” was recorded at a higher pace compared to the demo recording.

Just after the release of "When light uncovers grey" Edward Timmerman decided to leave the band. He was replaced by Anthony Jockhere who has a lot of experience in playing the drums. We were plesantly suprised on our first gig with Anthony. We are already looking forward how he will influense our next album...
